September 11th ~ the happy and the somber

September 11th is always a call for celebration around our place.

That's right.
My 'old faithful' is one year older today...
and that's a good excuse for a family breakfast this morning.

September 11th took on a new meaning a few years ago...
and the date never passes without us reflecting on the events of that day.
Though New York City is far away from this part of the world...
...we have our own little reminders and memorials over here.

The state tree of New York stands tall in the gardens at Harrison Hotsprings Resort...

...planted in memory of those who lost their lives in the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.

So today we celebrate a birthday...
thankful for the blessings of another year.
We also remember the September 11th that impacted all of us...
and particularly all those who lost loved ones on that day.

Rejoicing on one hand...
reflection on the other.

That is September eleven.

Happy Birthday Elmer!

  2. Happy Birthday, Elmer! It is my birthday, too! So, I know just how you feel. As my brother said this morning, "it was your birth-day long before it was a tragic-day. So, it is okay to celebrate." Pray your day is blessed.

  5. Happy birthday wishes out there. That is the way we have to handle it Judy for sure. I have been reading Thomas Merton and it is all in a life times experience. Ours lives go on and we grow in love or hate. Live and love, and celebrate birthdays.

  6. Happy Birthday to you Old Faithful! Our grandson becomes a teenager today - he was still a toddler when the WTC tragedy happened. As with you, there is celebration as well as reflection.

If 9-11 taught us anything it was to cherish life with our loved ones. I hope you have a happy celebration today!

  9. Birthdays a good reminder when they can be shared with friends, who share the same dates as their own grandchildren.
