a thanksgiving weekend to remember...

The menu is pretty much the same from year to year.
The table looked much as it did last year...
down to the crabapple nametags.

But a few things were different this year.
The dinner rolls had 'I'm thankful for...' slips inside.
That was new!
My daughter saw the idea on pinterest and decided we should do that.
She polled everyone in the family...
to see what one thing they were especially thankful for this year...
and sent me the list.
I printed them off...
strips of paper like those found in Chinese fortune cookies.

They got rolled up in the crescent rolls...
baked as usual...
and one dinner roll was placed at each place setting.
We found they were a little hard to unroll.
I learned after the fact that I should have slathered on an extra layer of butter before laying down the strips.
Next year!
We each read aloud what was on the paper at our plate...
and then guessed whose quote it could have been.
It was a good exercise for all of us!

Also different than usual...
the sizzling temperatures.
Since when is it hot at Thanksgiving?
As soon as the meal was done...
we decided to head to a nearby park for a bit with the whole gang.

Micah could have played in those crunchy leaves for hours!

The kids had a hoot!

The big kids too.

Oh...and we managed to wrangle baby Lucy into a photograph.
She wasn't any too happy about it...
and was trying to make her big escape.
But she is in the picture!

This was more what she had in mind!

We actually looked for shade...
and eventually returned home so the wee ones could nap...
and the big ones could have some ice-cream and a cold drink.
A warm one that we will not forget soon.
It was a good day.

  1. Judy, your table looks beautiful. I like the crabapple place tags, and thank you for the photo tutorial on the "Good Fortune" thankful rolls!
it is impressive that you got all 7 kids to look in the same direction at the same time and you and hubby aren't checking on kids to see if they are in compliance =)

  2. Your thanksgiving sounds wonderful Judy. I love the idea of the good fortune rolls. My sister tells me it hasn't rained there in a very long time so she's really enjoying the extended summer after visiting here and enjoying our hot summer weather. You have some beautiful grandkids and are blessed to have them nearby.

  3. The table looks great! The family is beautiful. Wonderful to see Baby Lucy after all this time. She's such a pretty little girl. That's a great photo of you and Elmer and all the grands. Pinterest just keeps offering up more ideas!☺

  4. Everything looked great Judy. What a fun idea with the verses in the rolls! That little Lucy is a kick!!

  5. How great is that - getting Lucy in the photo! Sounds like you had a lovely day. Thanks for sharing it with us.

  6. Looks like you had a fabulous Thanksgiving. Your grandchildren are so adorable - another great picture! I love the idea of putting a message in the dinner rolls and your table looked so welcoming.

  7. Lovely to see your family Thanksgiving gathering and the beautiful fall walk Judy! Whoever took the picture of you and the Grands did a fabulous job! Thanks for sharing the crescent roll idea. that would definitely be a fun idea to try for birthdays or Christmas.

  8. And we all celebrated along with you and enjoyed the wonderful idea from Pintrest...We had a completely different version...but it worked so well and we smiled and laughed and enjoyed the long last summer day.
Thanks for sharing your 'celebrations' with us.

  9. That Lucy, she's so elusive. And butter, that was the trick eh? Ah well. :)

  10. Am I the worst blogging friend ever or what? It has been ages since I have been here to visit you, but I do think of you often. My job is just in the way of my fun.

I was determined I was going to get here to wish a Happy Thanksgiving, but I missed it by a few days. I hope better late than never counts. It looks like you had a wonderful celebration.

  11. Your table looks lovely and such a great idea with the "thankful' rolls. You have a beautiful family although it does look a little strange seeing you all in tee shirts in October :)

  12. Things look very pretty. I love the rolls idea.\

  13. Love how you put this all together. We also were just amazed at the warm weather that came with Thanksgiving this year! Your picture with the grands is beautiful!

  14. Sounds like a nice day. Love the pictures of you with all the grands...even if Lucy is not happy!! :-)

  15. Sounds like the perfect day. Love the idea with the "thankfulness" rolls. Thanks for the tip about the extra butter too! Glad you and the family had such a nice day. xoxo

  16. Seriously, that is so cool. Once again, Pinterest rocks our world! And seeking shade at Thanksgiving! Luuuuuuv it! It's snowing in Calgary right now. And we are in the middle of a heat wave! Luuuuuuuuv that too!

  17. Your table looks like a magazine picture and your daughter's Pinterest idea was a good one. I have tucked that away because I like anything that teaches our little ones to have a thankful heart. The park you all spent time at, is the most beautiful, peaceful looking place and seems like the perfect way to spend the Thanksgiving day. Your pictures are so much fun to look at.

  18. What a beautiful table..thankful slip idea and then...oh seeing you and ALL your grands just made me smile. It is a good idea to play outside with all that trapped energy.
