christmas in spring...

I like to make a good thing last for a very long time...and so it is that I have just finally finished unwrapping my Christmas present.

At Christmas I opened a card...where I read that I was to go shopping...for a new dining room table and chairs. That took a while...since it's not something one does every day...and there aren't many BIG tables out there. A few shopping trips later...and with input from my daughter...and a good friend...I was ready to place my order for a custom made table.

Now it is here...all eight feet of it...along with extensions for either end. It seats a crowd...or the entire gang when they are here for dinner. We checked it out on Sunday...and had plenty of elbow space. We've even got room for a few more. I quite like it!

This was the first time that we have ever shopped for a real table. Through all these years we have used an assortment of hand-me-downs...which always served the purpose. Jeremy and Broni are now enjoying our original dining room suite...which belonged to my great uncle and aunt at one time. Heidi has laid claim to the one that we just replaced...which was my mom's dining room suite. Who knows where this one will land up one day...but for now I will enjoy it!

I love having friends and family (sometimes strangers) over...and somehow it's always easier to visit around the table. No matter which way you look at it, wonderful things happen when given the opportunity to gather around the table. I found that quote at the bottom of the Mennonite Girls Can Cook recipe blog...and I agree.

I have friends coming tonight...and we'll try the table on for size.

Have a great day...

  2. Entertaining around the table is the best!.....and often the hour after the meal is over, when we're sitting over our tea and coffee chatting is the best of the best.
    Gorgeous table choice!

  4. Beautiful table and chairs Judy, and it looks great in that room! But of course, it is the people around it that are the most important. May you enjoy many dinners around it. Dairymary

  5. Hi Judy!

Thank you for the "welcome back"! I'm still trying to get adjusted to the day without a little baby in my arms. It was a wonderful visit and I already miss them so much.

Your new table is gorgeous! I am like you in that I have had the same dining room table and chairs for my whole marriage of 35 years. It began as a large kitchen table set, as our first apartment had a large kitchen. It opens to 110 inches, so it fits ten people, but I'd still like an even larger set someday. We've had as much as 30 people for dinner and it meant we had to add folding tables on the ends, all the way into the living room! Big families are always fun. :-)

Off to read more of what I've missed on your blog while I was away!

  6. That is my kind of table. With 6 children and 6 in-laws, 11 grandchildren we need a large table also. You did a great job. Thanks for sharing.

  9. I appreciate a hostess who seats her guests. So often entertaining is wandering around with a paper plate or balancing a plate on your knees. Thank you for continuing the gracious tradition of setting a place at the table for guests.

  13. Here is my favorite dinner table verse:
"Blessings on all who reverence and trust the Lord--on all who obey Him! Their reward shall be prosperity and happiness. Your wife shall be contented in your home. And look at all those children! There they sit around the dinner table as vigorous and healthy as young olive trees. That is God's reward to those who reverence and trust Him. May the Lord continually bless you with heaven's blessings as well as with human joys." Psalm 128
    Enjoy your table!

Just what someone like you needs with all of your family and friends. I say you made a great choice!! Your header picture is beautiful also.
