whistler ~ a mountaintop experience

We are back home...
after spending four wonderful days at Whistler.

We spent a good part of one day riding chairlifts...
and hiking on the mountains.

The sun was shining...
and it was 'almost warm' on top.

Though we wished we had packed a picnic...
we found a restaurant with a view at the top of one of the chairlifts.
We enjoyed a snack...

...and then carried on to the Whistler summit.

And a photo with the famous inukshuk...of course!

Most of the hiking trails at the top were closed...
still too much snow!

But we found a few short trails...
with wonderful views!

We brought our granddaughters up the chairlift when they were three years old.
Emme still recalls falling down in the snow while wearing shorts...
and not being too happy about it.
I promised I'd take a photo for her...
one of myself sitting in the snow at Whistler in July.
She said, "But you have to wear shorts."
So...this photo was for Emme!

For the first time ever...
we rode the Peak-2-Peak gondola.
It connects Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains...
with the longest continuous lift system in the world.

It's a 4.4 kilometre journey...
high above the valley floor below (1430 feet...to be exact).

The view was incredible!

We rode an open chair back down the mountain...

...and watched a bear digging up a log just below us.

Before long we were safely back on the valley floor...
where we camped for the duration of our stay...
next to the river where the wildflowers grow.

And that's where we celebrated our wedding anniversary n 2011!

What beautiful mountain scenes. I'm surprised by the snow. That can't be the norm for this time of year.

  7. So if you can hop from chair to chair and gondola, to gondola...then it's time to strap on your skis and go down hill with me this winter. Maybe we could do that for our 60th.
Looks like you had a great time and that we will be revisiting some of these places shortly.

  18. Judy - I really enjoyed seeing all the pictures of Whistler. Your gondola picture brought back memories for me. 42 years ago in early June I caught the gondola at Whistler with some friends who were going to do a little spring skiing. I took my book along and then decided to wait for my friends at the lodge below so hopped on the gondola only to have it stop in mid air. I was by myself and swung back and forth for about 10 minutes before it started up again. Needless to say I was a little worried and discovered they had been doing maintenance and hadn't realized anyone was on the gondola until I hopped out. You sure had a wonderful 40th Anniversary - congratulations !
