tropical delight...

Come mid-January my poinsettias had lost their appeal...and I went to the garden shop in search of something else to brighten my table. I wasn't really thinking orchids...but that's what I came home with...and have been enjoying my little potted orchid for the past few weeks.

When my sister was out for a visit...we went for a tour of our local orchid greenhouse...where orchids are grown commercially and harvested every year from October through May. Where once they grew long-stemmed roses...

...they now have 10,000 cymbidium orchid plants. They come in all shades...whites, pinks and yellows...

...but my favorite ones are the lime greens.

Baltic Glacier Mint...even the name is appealing!

The Van Den Bosch family is most hospitable...and welcomes those who like to come snoop on occasion.

Customers who once came for long stemmed roses...now leave with an armful of orchids. Very nice...for a change! I've been here before...and I'll be back.

  1. This is most fascinating! Never saw this variety of flowers grown in such numbers. Orchids are becoming so popular and these are simply beautiful! I am wondering how difficult it is to keep them looking healthy and vibrant like the one you purchased? I would definitely visit that tropical greenhouse if I had the opportunity to do so. Once again you provided another educational experience for me. Thank you!

  3. They look just beautiful.
Amy picked orchids for the mother's corsages at her wedding, I think they are the green ones if I am right. No matter, they will be lovely what ever color.

  4. Wow, Judy, all those orchids are so beautiful - I should check the greenhouse out one day.
We saw Paper Wheat this week, and thoroughly enjoyed it! For any local readers - it is worth your time to go. The actors and actresses had us in tears, and in stitches, and as well educated us. Dairymary

  6. Gorgeous! I'll be waiting for your tips on how to get an orchid to bloom after a season of being flowerless. I suspect that it may need a bit more "change of seasons" than what my house has given it. A terrarium on the patio?

  7. Aren't they lovely!

My poinsettia is still going strong and I am not going to kill it. Tell me now, did you kill yours or just send it to a back room? ☺ I am hoping that the red fades to green, though.

  8. By the way, did you notice that Chilliwack has moved up a notch on the Monopoly top 20 list, and Victoria is right behind it? I'm sure our votes (via your encouragement) did it!

  9. Very lovely - and such a nice treat in the wintertime. I'm heading to town today and I hope to pick up some bright little plant to add to my indoor garden.

  10. My Christmas flowers are still blooming on the kitchen window sill and likely to do so for a while yet. That orchid is beautiful, though - I'm tempted! We were given an orchid in July and it lasted right through to October when we returned from Japan - now that's value!

  12. They are addictive...and since a blooming plant lasts much longer than a picked bouquet, really are a good value. We have had luck getting ours to rebloom, at least we did in Texas. My dream: to have a small room filled with orchid plants like the one they have in the Longwood Garden in Pennsylvania, with waterfalls and moss covered walls and humidity that is just right for orchids.

  13. Aren't they lovely? I like the tropical lime green ones too!

I have windowsills full plants in my home... would you believe that some are over 35 years old? I wonder if I could keep potted orchids alive?
