saturday ~ then and now...

The Saturday of my childhood often shows up in my rear view mirror.
It was the day we changed the bed linens...
and cleaned the house...
and baked buns and sweets.
We polished shoes...
and washed the car...
and made sure the Sunday clothes were good to go.
And at the end of the day...
we all had our Saturday night bath...
reviewed our memory verse for Sunday School...
and went to bed...
ready for the day of rest after a hard day's work.

I actually thought of that on Saturday...
as the day dawned bright and clear.
My planned activities for the day looked nothing like those I remember from long ago.

They involved a lengthy drive through the valley...
beginning bright and early...

...and in good company, of course.
The drive took us to South Langley...
where Mennonite Girls Can Cook were invited to take part in a Christmas brunch
organized by a church women's group.

What a fun event it was...
from the decor and the food...
to the warm welcome and the good fellowship we had!

Lovella told our story...
as she does so well.

Anneliese demonstrated the making of a Christmas wreath sweet bread...
which everyone had a chance to sample at the end.
She made it look most simple...and so pretty!

As for Marg and I...
we were the 'backstage hands'...
and rather liked our stress-free morning.

Thanks to all the lovely ladies who showed up on Saturday morning...
to those who came and chatted...
to those who shared encouraging words...
and to those who shared from their pocketbooks to help us in our mission to feed hungry children...
specifically those at the Good Shepherd Shelter in the Ukraine.

We could have hurried home after...
and still accomplished a few things on the home front.

But we decided to stop for coffee...
the four of us.
It was a very long 'coffee'.
And beside the coffee shop was a boutique...
and so we ducked in there for a bit.
And on the way home we made a few more stops...
ending at the greenhouse where we checked out their Christmas displays.
By then the afternoon was almost done...
and we were invited to the home of friends for dinner.

It was a wonderful Saturday.
But not at all like the Saturdays I recall from long ago.
Maybe next Saturday I'll clean, bake, and wash the car...
just for old times sake!

  1. Your old time Saturdays sound so familiar to me too. The smell of freshly waxed floors, pies baking, and fresh linens is still engrained in my memory. My mother was a night hawk and baked late into the evening on Saturdays. I sometimes feel a twinge of guilt when my Saturdays don't measure up to these. Looks like you gals did a great job presenting and had a lot of fun together.

  2. Sounds like a great Saturday and I'm glad you could enjoy it like you did. I do think I need one of those good ole Saturdays from days gone by to get a wee bit more organized around here. Blessings on your week!

  3. As I read this post, a verse came to my mind. It was the verse; "Call unto Me and I will show you great and mighty things which you do not know", from the book of Jeremiah. You all did not have any idea all the many, many opportunities your cookbook would present to you and ALL the many children who are being helped by God's leading each of you. What an amazing story!

My childhood Saturdays were so similiar to yours, and to be quite honest, I had forgotten some of those details, until I read this post. The Saturday night memory verses were a part of my life and I still remember some of them.

The four hour coffee with good friends and a boutique along with it...what could be better!

  4. I also remember doing chores on Saturday to help lighten my Mother's lode. I loved to bake and iron clothes and those were the chores I did and still enjoy doing. I also shined my dad's shoes and would go to the newstand to buy his two newspapers on the weekend. Sweet memories.

It's so nice you were able to meet again to do a MGCC demo and enjoy each other's company and earn more for those special orphans in the Ukraine.

  5. Hi Judy, thanks for stopping by! Such gorgeous country up there; I'm enjoying your photos. I'll be seeing Mt. Baker from the other side myself later this week, just a quick trip for my aunt's 80th birthday party.

I am looking forward to the new cookbook too.

  7. Saturdays certainly are different today aren't they? However, it sounds like you had a wonderful time with your friends and for a good cause. Pamela

  8. I don't know...your new Saturday seems richer, fuller, deeper, but then, I'm sure that your childhood Saturdays had many joys, too.

  9. Your childhood Saturdays could have been mine. How different things are now. New memories, new traditions. The tradition of sharing your cooking to benefit others is one that carries on in a new form these days. How wonderful to hear of new opportunities for the MGCC girls.

  10. It seems that many of us remember Saturdays that were full of chores and preparation for Sunday. I enjoyed reading the two takes on your Saturday - both sound like a lot of fun.
