flowers for frieda...

I'm planting tulips today.
Normally one plants bulbs a little earlier in fall...
but the ground isn't frozen yet...
so I'm sure they will be fine.

I'm planting with a purpose this year!

Last year I told you about a wonderful woman in my life...
whose name is Frieda.

You can read about her right here...

Frieda has had a difficult journey over the past while...
with a husband who was very ill.
He passed away last week...
and we attended his memorial service on Wednesday.
Saying farewell  is always easier for those left behind...
when they know without a doubt they will see their loved one again.
That is the kind of celebration of life we attended.
Frieda was at peace.

The day after the funeral she received test results
that indicated she has inoperable stomach cancer...
and may not have long for this world.
She said that when she planted her tulip bulbs this fall...
God had told her this would be the last time that she would be planting her bulbs.
She is hoping to see them bloom come spring.
We are praying she does.

Frieda has prayed for us through the years...
and often reminds us of that.
Now we are praying for Frieda...
that God will pour out His blessings on her in the days she left.

And we are planting tulip bulbs in her honour.
Her favorite colour of tulips?
Red and white.
I have two bags of red bulbs...
and one of white.
Some of our friends  are also planting tulip bulbs this week.
Heidi and Broni (my daughter and DIL) are planting tulips for Frieda.

There's nothing like a mass planting of tulips to brighten a day.
Come spring...
our blooms will surely brighten up this corner of the world.
And we will think of Frieda who has brightened the day for us...
many times.

  1. That is a beautiful thing to do, to celebrate your friend's love of red and white tulips. I'm sure there will be a prayer for every trowel stroke into the earth.

  6. What a beautiful tribute to Frieda. I have so much appreciated her over the past few years that I have gotten to know her.
I think today is a good day to my plant my flowers and say that extra prayer for her.

  8. After reading this I could not help but think that angels in heaven are possibly planting tulips in her honor as well ... May the days she has on this earth be filled with God's comfort and joy. It's so good to know that spring comes after the cold of winter. May God grant her the desires of her heart.

  9. I don't think I'll ever plant another tulip without thinking of this post. What a lovely thing to do. I do remember when you first introduced us to Frieda. She sounds like a wonderful lady and one who it would be a blessing to know.

  12. I am so sorry to hear Frieda's husband passed and then she received dire news about her own health. She lived her life fully and faithfully, and will be ready to go to her Glory. I will join you in prayer that God pours out His blessings upon her and her family.

The red and white tulips are a wonderful way to pay tribute to her, Judy. I do hope Frieda will see them bloom this spring!

  13. Very difficult and sad news indeed. It is so sad to loose a mother. No one can ever replace her. Frieda is a lovely lady, She is a caring and wonderful friend to many. I too have fond memories of her. I trust she will have some quality months still to enjoy. The tulips a lovely idea. I asked Vern if we could plant some as well - he said too late, the ground is frozen.
    Love to the families. Martha

  16. I can't think of a sweeter way to show that you care for Freida, than planting red and white tulip bulbs. I love this idea! I pray that God will give her peace for her remaining journey, and that others will bless her as she has so often blessed others. This makes me want to go plant bulbs today. When I do I too will rememeber dear Freida.
