say cheese...

I was gifted a lovely cheese basket...
by our son...
who likes rolling cheese more than eating it!

While we were road-tripping along the east coast...
he was involved in the Canadian Cheese Rolling Festival in Whistler.

It is the craziest and largest events of its kind in the world...
where contestants chase an eleven pound wheel of cheese down a steep mountain slope...
with hopes of winning the wheel of cheese or season ski passes to Whistler Blackcomb.

The event is hosted by Dairy Farmers of Canada...
promoting BC and Canadian cheeses.

Through his involvement with the BC Dairy Association...
Jeremy has been involved as both a roller and a participant for the past few years.

Yup...
that's him in the orange striped rugby shirt in the center of the pack.
He survived to tell of it.

The cheese wheel is sent on its way by the roller...
and careens down the slope at 60 miles an hour.
The racers chase after it.

No one ever catches it!
The cheese lands up against a barricade of hay bales...
and the first person across the finish line is 'the big cheese'.

There are men's and women's divisions...
and apparently thousands show up to watch the event.

It's just as well that I never knew about it until it was over!
I do know that my cheese tray has something to do with his involvement in the cheese rolling event.

The cheese needed to be shared...
and I found the perfect occasion to do just that.

We had some friends over earlier this week.
We nibbled on cheese...

 ...and celebrated a special occasion.

Having friends over is a good excuse for up-dating the decor.

It's looking a little more like autumn over here these days...
in keeping with the weather.

The corn is off the fields...as of yesterday.
It's all good.

  1. Now that is a most interesting way to obtain your cheese basket. I imagine it made good conversation at your get-together.
Having now seen Whistler for myself, I can see why you felt it best to not know about this event until it was over.
Your autumn table looks very welcoming.

  2. Ha! I'm glad to see that they wear protective gear...it looks like a wipe-out waiting to happen! All's well that end's well and having friends over to nibble cheese certainly qualifies!

  4. This was soo interesting to read about! How fun, haha. I am sure the cheese was just delicious! My dairy farmer son in law is busy harvesting their corn this week-end! I got to watch that being done last year at this time...soo interesting for this city girl. Enjoy your week-end!

  5. I have seen these cheese rolling contests on the news from Europe and Britain but sure didn't know it was a big thing in BC. That's so fun. I'm glad your son survived his run down the mountain. And what a lovely cheese basket! I now can picture your dining room with the beautiful built ins at the end of the harvest table. Lovely! It's nice to celebrate a 40th anniversary too. Have a great weekend. Hugs, Pam

  6. I'd heard of cheese rolling in the UK but never Whistler! What an event! I see they are all wearing protective gear on that steep hill, which is a good thing. The cheese basket is so pretty and probably tasted even better. Love your dining room table arrangement.

  9. This is the first time I heard of the cheese rolling in Whistler. : ) Looks like crazy fun. My mom made cheese wheels on their farm in Europe when she was young. I wonder what she would think of this.
