a canadian dessert celebration!

We're back...
from our Canada Day celebrations in the desert.

We had a family reunion...
with cousins we rarely see...
at a campground in Oliver.

Oliver is at the north end of the Great Basin Desert which extends south to the Sonoran Desert in Mexico.
Once covered by cacti and sage brush...
irrigation can be credited with transforming it into a lush, green community...
that is known as the 'wine capital' of Canada.

Since we always visit around July 1st...
I go in search of cherries...
not grapes.

And yes...
I had my fill!

We celebrated our national holiday in good company...

...all sporting Canadian flag tattoos...
thanks to Yvonne, the persistent pre-school teacher among us...
who assured us they would wash off before July 4th rolled around!

Even the owner of the RV park left our campsite with a maple leaf on his cheek.

We had a lot of fun...
caught up on family news from the past three years...
and ate far too much.

Today it is back to real life over here.

But my thoughts are with all my American friends and family who are celebrating their country's birthday today.

Happy 235th Birthday...USA!

  1. Thank you! Now where can I find a little red, white, and blue tattoo? ☺

Cherries, love'em. Did you pick enough for canning?

  2. Mmmmm cherries warm from the tree. I had to smile at the thought of the pre-school teacher among you - every family reunion should have one!

  3. Looks like a great celebration. Your photos are lovely and that pile of cherries looks yummy.

  4. Looks like you had a great time... those cherries look amazing. I think we Brits miss out a bit on all this celebrating it all looks such fun!

  5. It's always fun to go and catch up and have those persistent teachers haggle us a bit.
Good times for all and it's time we start biking more eh?

  6. Mmm. Cherries from the Okanagan are the BEST!

  7. Yum cherries! Your really had a nice spread on that table at the campground. Glad you are back safe and sound. Thank you for the shout out to the U.S.A.

  8. We're enjoying cherries so much again - the season is just far too short! Glad you had a great time.. Super photos!

  9. Judy you always do such a good job of informing us of the various regions you visit. We've been in Oliver countless times and I never took the time to find out the name of the desert it is in!
Looks like a wonderful time and the food.. and cherries! look good enough to eat right off the page.

  10. Glad you had a great time, Judy! Did you bring home lots of cherries?

  11. Now I discovered what our family affair was missing...tatoos:) What to have a family reunion with a dessert celebration, especially when cherries are in season. Great pictures!

  12. Thank you Judy! We've had a fun day so far doing something a little different.

I love your photos of the cherries! I'd buy enough to make a few pies...yum!

  13. One day I shall come for those cherries and not leave till I have my fill:)

  14. I see Rollkuchen too! Did you make that fresh at the campsite?!!

  15. Now that buffet table looks very inviting....and the to get me some!
