sorry we missed the party...

It's grad season...and students everywhere are celebrating the end of an era.

My nephew...who was only born yesterday (or so it seems)...
had a big grad celebration over the weekend.

Now grad is a big deal everywhere...
but in Iowa they really do it up big.

They send out invitations...
and gather friends and family from near and far...
and make it a milestone to remember.

Some of my family...from Texas and from Manitoba...
along with my dad from British Columbia...
are in Iowa right now...
taking in the weekend festivities.

I was tempted...and almost hopped a plane!

But then I got to thinking...
that Matt is the first of six of my brother's kids to graduate...
and I would surely be setting a precedent...
if I went to his grad.

And then there will be weddings one day, I am sure...
times six!

And so I sadly passed up a quick trip to the American Midwest...
and stuck a card in the mail instead.

Meet Matthew...

...born and raised in Iowa
...and with a few Canadian roots.

He was always a bundle of energy...
full of ideas and solutions...
and never afraid of hard work!

At home on a tractor...an ATV...
or farm truck since he was wee...
Matt is an avid hunter...
a local fireman...
a football player...
a farmer...
and now a student who has successfully completed twelve years of schooling.

Congrats...and many blessings to you as your journey continues!

  1. It certainly must get challenging when the family grows and extends its branches way out. But it blessed me all to pieces to know that your dad is there. And I know that you are there in spirit. A fine tribute to a fine young man.

  3. They grow up so fast. My 'baby' graduated this year and wants to become a fireman. What happened to kindergarten? It seems like just yesterday was his first day of school.

It's hard when you have a large family that is scattered everywhere. My oldest son now lives in Arizona along with my mom and sister so I know how it feels to miss out on some milestones.

  4. We missed our youngest nephews graduation this weekend also in California but we had a graduation right here in Washington that took precedence :0)
With our large family we have to keep the traveling to weddings :0)
    Great post honoring your nephew!
    Congrats to him...

  5. My "baby" graduates next year. Time seems to have flown by so very fast. But it's been a wonderful ride.

  6. Congratulations to Matt! I wish him much success in his chosen career or as he advances on to college.

My siblings are also spread out all over the country. I am the only one who "stayed put" but who knows what the future will bring?

  8. It's not easy when they live so far away, but I'm sure he knew that you were with him in spirit, if not in person.

  9. I also have a nephew, Matt, who graduated this year... in our town... but you know how it is... there are never enough tickets... so I dropped off a card at the house.
