to catch a thief...

The crows have been mighty busy...and noisy...around our place recently.  They are also quite skittish...and don't care to pose for the surveillance camera...but every so often they are caught unaware!

I noticed that my roses were being picked...and picked apart...without my permission.  Saturday I watched the crow club in action.  First they called a meeting on the fence...and then they went at it!  By the time they were done...the roses looked defeated...and the crows were caught red handed by my trusty Canon.

Last week as I was mowing the lawn...I noticed cream coloured disks lying on the grass...and in the flower beds.  I finally stopped to take a closer look...

...and noticed they were sand dollars.  Rather odd...since we live quite some distance from the sandy shore.

About that time I noticed a crow struggling with his heavy load...as he left my front porch.  Aha!  Now I knew exactly what was happening.  I have a basket of rocks from our travels...and sand dollars from the beach...sitting on the porch.  The crow is going after the almighty dollar...but he will discover soon enough that the loonies don't have much value these days!

Oh...it looks like he's brought in the troops!  When they start making off with the rock collection...I'll call in help as well.

 Have a great day...

  1. I guess the pale color against the rocks makes them think it's glittering! That's just too funny!

  2. Wow, I've never seen crows do that! Can you hang pie plates up to scare them away? Dairymary

  3. Those Valley Crows must be on steroids! Ours just make a lot of noise and harass the ducks - I hope the thieving trend stays on the mainland!

  4. Love this post Judy and I can so identify with it. We have a "murder" of crows hanging around. There are a group of 3 that I call the 3 Stooges. I'm always finding the weirdest things dropped on my lawn...

  5. You have a murder of bandit crows there! Rose-eating, sand dollar stealing - I've never thought of those as crow activities.

  6. I saw your mosaic, or collage, on Pondside’s blog and came to get a better look. It is charming and I wish I knew how you did that – pictures on top of other pictures. My daughter in California started me on my blog last year and installed a small program on my computer to make collages. It is OK but does not give me too many different ways to show my pictures. I looked at some more of your photographs, and they are beautiful. The area where you live is lovely too, so green. I have been several times to British Columbia and would love to go back.

  8. I wonder why they tear apart the roses? Are they eating rose petal salad?

  9. PS: If Lovella invited these crows to dinner, I'm sure her beautiful edible floral arrangements would be picked clean!

  10. Jeepers...the "black garbed" terrorists have left Toronto and are headed to the west coast! Quick...call out the riot squad...or cats...which ever is most handy.

  11. This was so amusing, Judy! I've known crows to be attracted to shiny objects but never roses.

When I visited Ireland years ago the milkman would cover the milk bottle he left on a family's outside porch with a heavy metal cup, otherwise the crows would peck open the paper seal on the bottle and drink the milk!

  12. Great job catching those crows in action. I smiled all the way through your post today. I can't imagine seeing them sneaking away with your sand dollars.

  13. We saw two dead crows beside the road, on our walk, last week. Wondered if someone decided they'd had enough of the noise and mischief. (someone with a sling shot?)

  14. don't get me started on crows. They killed my white pine with their wee ones pooping over the side of the nest. . .nope .they are not welcome on our farm.

  15. (This would make a great Monday Mosaic.) Wow. You sure have some cheeky crows. Stealing dollars and pummeling the roses. Should I give the same advice that everyone's been giving me? "Annie, get your gun!"

  16. Crows...we have a crow we call Russel hanging out here these days...wondering if your crow family is missing a little family member. He seems lost. Kathy

  19. Can you believe that I live the whole way across the country and I am living with the same problem. I should have some hidden cameras. I was surprised that they tried to take your sand dollars. That mad me laugh. Last weekend I was up in the mountains and was sitting on the porch having coffee at 5:30am, and the crows made so much noise, I had to go inside. It must be everyone's problem. The story form that you shared this was great.

  20. Just today I witnessed a couple of crows chasing a hawk out of their territory...the crows have claimed a small sanctuary were they have nested, and each afternoon when this hawk flies near them, these two crows start screaming and chasing after this hawk...I would have to capture that picture with my Blackberry if I saw a crow lugging a sand dollar. You made my day...
