a birthday picnic on memory lane...

Our firstborn son had a birthday yesterday...
and so we planned a family picnic to help him celebrate the occasion.

Greenpoint picnic site on Harrison Lake seemed like the perfect place.

All the more...
when I looked back through the archives and found we had been at that exact place in August, 1981.
That was exactly thirty years ago.

I brought the photo along...
and they all had a good laugh.
(It seems they thought their mommy dressed them funny!)

And just for the record...
we took another photo at the very same spot.
In thirty years...
they can laugh again!

Back in the day...
the birthday cake was always a cake.
Yesterday...
the birthday cake was a pie.

another blast from the past...
and served on a McDonald's plate that was once Kris's favorite.

I had planned the trip down memory lane...
even re-gifting him his card from his eighth birthday.
But here is what I could never have planned!
We had just finished singing 'happy birthday' when Kris's childhood friend showed up.
Steve was at Kris's birthday celebration every year from age 5 to 16.
They rarely see each other these days...
but Steve just happened to be at Greenpoint with his family yesterday.

And so I took a picture...of course!

A family birthday picture...August 14, 2011.

On his first birthday, Kris was learning to walk.
Now...all these years later...he is learning to walk once again.
He is down to one crutch...
and looking forward to the day when he can stand on his own two feet once again!
The road to recovery following his accident in early April has not been quite as speedy as he had hoped.
But things could have been much worse...
and we are so thankful to be able to celebrate his birthday together this year!.

Despite the rainy weather forecast...
it turned out to be a great afternoon for a picnic...
and a fun way to celebrate a birthday!

Same place...same time...thirty years?

Wishing you a wonderful year ahead, Kris!

  1. I love the 'then' and 'now' photos - great idea, because their kids are going to love them. You always have the nicest kind of celebration, Judy!

  2. I tell you, God always has a plan. You may think you're doing all the planning, but then something like an old friend stepping in "out of the blue" happens. How cool is that?! (Sorry, Mama, but I'm with the kids on those get-ups. What were we thinking back then? Ha!) Love the new family photos and so glad that Kris is down to one crutch.

  5. Happy birthday to Kris! I'm so glad to hear he is improving, even if it is a little too slowly for his taste. This looked like a wonderful birthday celebration and it is so nice you could all be together for it. which is not something we can often do at my family.

PS: My children also complain I dressed them funny when they were young...lol!

  6. What a wonderful celebration for your son. Thank the Lord for his continuing recovery. It is always good for us, as Mom's to look back, even if our kids don't appreciate it. Just to see the Lord's faithfulness to us!

I'm amazed at the clarity of your photos from 13 years ago! Great contrasting pictures.

Good to have you stop by once again!

  7. In thirty years they certainly won't be able to blame you for what they wore in 2011. I love these kind of comparissons.
Thought about it a few times this past weeek that it was 20 years ago that I was in Lancaster and New York ...no idea of when and how the next time would come about.
