food safe rules...

We have high standards here in British Columbia...and require food safe certification for anyone involved in food preparation for the public in any way, shape or form. Church and community potlucks are a thing of the past...since who knows under what conditions the dishes were prepared. Don't trust anything that is not certified to be 'food safe'. As someone who was involved in food services at our church kitchen for years...I was required to take the British Columbia Food Safe course and received my certification to prove my qualifications.

Yesterday...a blazing hot June day...Ryder came for a visit. His favorite thing to do at Grammy's house is to bake cookies...and no amount of persuasion could deter him. And so the oven was turned on...and we baked chocolate chip cookies...

...all under 'food safe' supervision. Wouldn't you feel so much better about eating cookies that were baked with a 'food safe' certified grammy on site? They disappeared in a hurry...so now I'll post the play-by-play pictures. I'm not so sure the 'food safe inspector' would have been so impressed with the slight bending of many rules! Oh yes...Ryder also washed up when the baking was done.

Enjoy the sunshine (or the shade!)...

  1. There's no doubt that cookies baked in the kitchen of a Food Safe Certified granny must be the safest and the best. Only the kind of granny that you are is able to arrange for the secret ingredient to be mixed in with every scoop of the spoon. The secret ingredient?........love.

  2. A "food safe certified" grandma...what a lucky little guy he is. I worked with my friend at the school kitchen for a few years, and I learned so much from her regarding food saftey. It is so important. We still have many covered dish meals in this area, and I am always guarded when I attend one. Most of the ones I attend are very carefully regulated. But one can never be too careful. Informative post my friend.

  3. Judy . ..I love this post. What a great grammy you are .. . I put my butter back in the fridge and grandgirlie was none the wiser since she doesn't know yet what all goes in Chocolate Chip Cookies. . .I need a certificate . ..been thinking about it. .perhaps you could do a seminar and I could write the test.

  4. Judy, another prized blog. Eating cookie dough is better than the cookie itself. Ryder us such a cutie. We have all smiled this morning.

  5. I always say your own germs won't hurt you, but you are right about public picnics. HH got seriously ill years ago at one and hasn't been back since.

  6. Very cute, indeed! I wonder how he prefers them - raw or baked?

  7. I remember in Home Ec food prep classes that when home made baby food was compared with factory prepared baby food, the home made stuff usually had all kinds of unsanitary elements.

And somehow...home made was considered more healthy.

Whatever...home made anything just tastes better (most of the time!)

  8. Cookies baked with Gramma are the BEST! I taught food safety in my last job and wrote a column on food safety for our local paper. Food safety is really an important issue and is one of those things that the more you know, the scarier it is! My own sons have grown up knowing how to use a meat thermometer, proper refrigeration and handwashing BUT having said that, the rules are really relaxed when baking cookies with kids!

  9. Ryder is so cute, and such a good baker! Grammy has been a good teacher!

Before we go out to eat I always try to check out a restaurant's recent health inspection results (just do a Google search). Many a time I've changed our plans when I saw how many serious violations there were -- even at top restaurants! So food safety is important.

  10. Judy, here is a website where you can purchase own root roses out of Spokane, and they have Martha. http://www.northlandrosarium.com/
If you are down that way it is a fun place to stop. The Farm Chicks are having their big show this weekend. Lots of friends are heading up there.
But I am staying put as Knitting Mania is coming in for a one day stop to see me, the roses, and Babies R Us :)

Ryder sure has a great grandma that would turn the oven on during a hot summers day for his sweet tooth :)

  13. I'm another one that is always checking the inspection rating prior to dining out.

But, I do believe Ryder has the perfect place for safe and yummy dining. No one does it better than Grammy.

  14. Same here, even with Food Hygeine certificates (which I have) I could not bake at home for any public event.
